Markets prove their performance

The national Mission for Markets campaign today demonstrates that UK Markets can prove their contribution to their local economies, enabling them for the first time to demonstrate their worth to owners, retailers, and potential investors

Original research conducted in spring 2015 by sector specialists ROI Team provides hard data about the economic performance of markets in England, and how they contribute to their local retail economies, indicating for example:

  • Markets deliver a big turnover from a small footprint –so are the friends of town centre locations
  • Markets support more jobs per area than other retail outlets
  • Markets are making a growing contribution into the local business chain

ROI Team’s work was commissioned by Nabma, the National Association of British Market Authorities, with part funding provided by individual participating markets

During February and March 2015 ROI Team assessed spend in six progressive markets in the UK, drawing turnover data from both customers and from Traders. ROI Team’s reports, produced initially on a market specific basis, highlight:

  • Refurbished indoor/outdoor market in the NW generating almost £30m per year and supporting 160 jobs
  • Compact outdoor market in a London suburb, operating from a previously under-used town centre space, which generates almost £3.5m per year and supports 50 jobs
  • Family trader at a NW market now providing thousands of meals per week to Singapore Airlines and to Chester Zoo cafes
  • One day per week outdoor market in the NW which generates almost £2m per year on an investment by the council of less than £1,000

An objective of the Mission for Markets initiative is to bring to markets intelligence and information resources which are already widely available across the retail world. To this end the methodology used by ROI Team for this work is to be made freely available to market managers via the Mission for Markets website (www.mission4markets.uk)

Releasing the reports, Graham Wilson OBE, CEO of Nabma commented:

‘This is a significant step forward for the retail markets sector. We have demonstrated the economic importance of six award-winning markets across England. We can now use this work to enable every market in the country to prove its worth and to pitch for funds and investment. We welcome this work which strengthens the current Mission for Markets initiative’

Andrew McCall, Managing Director of research company ROI Team commented:

‘ROI Team are delighted to make this contribution to Mission for Markets, as part of our work to bring to the sector the levels of proof of performance that other retail sectors take for granted.  We recognize the importance of retail markets as instigators of local economic value, and as places for incubating new retail talent.’
